From Serving Students to Serving Patients: Lifelong Dedication to Service
"This experience has challenged me in ways that I never imagined. Having several responsibilities such as lesson planning, the behaviors of rambunctious teenagers, two coordinator roles, and a long-term capstone project really tested my resolve and time management skills. I knew coming into this job that it would be hard, yet rewarding. But, I was still astounded by the impact that it had on me and the students that I serve." Learn more about City Year Miami AmeriCorps alumni Dahlin Jackson's year in service and how this challenging year gave him the skills he needs to succeed in medical school next year.
How National Service Prepared Me for My Professional Journey
Many college graduates experience the unease of not knowing what comes next after graduation. Whether you serve one, or two years, we care that you are prepared for the next step, whatever it may be, when you leave. What Do City Year AmeriCorps Members Do? Run Afterschool Programs
City Year AmeriCorps members spend their days serving students as tutors, mentors and role models in 313 schools nationwide. Although they spend a significant amount of time in the classroom, City Year AmeriCorps members’ days extend beyond the last bell. A key component of the role involves supporting and leading afterschool programs. Current City Year San Jose teammates Kailey Rawston and Liza Flores share how they manage afterschool time and creatively keep about 100 students engaged and motivated after classes end every day.
